Rainy Day Engagement Photos in the Tetons | Kendall & Sam
A little rain can make the Tetons feel completely different.
We photographed Kendall and Sam just a couple of days after they got engaged, on their final day in the area before flying home. Instead of the bright, postcard-perfect mountain weather people often imagine for a Jackson Hole engagement session, we got a rainy afternoon in Tetonia, Idaho—and it ended up being exactly what the shoot needed.
Low clouds settled over Teton Valley, everything turned deep green, and the rain gave the landscape that soft, moody quality that makes the Tetons feel a little more wild.
For Kendall and Sam, this wasn't a styled shoot or something planned months in advance. They had literally just gotten engaged. That made the entire session feel less like posing for engagement photos and more like documenting the first few days of being engaged.
And that's exactly the kind of thing we love to photograph.
Engagement Photography in Jackson Hole and the Tetons
At Teton Photo & Video, we photograph and film engagement sessions throughout Jackson Hole, Grand Teton National Park, Teton Valley, Tetonia, Driggs, Victor, and the surrounding mountains of Wyoming and Idaho.
Our approach is rooted in documentary filmmaking and fine-art photography. We want the landscape to feel huge, but we also want the photographs to feel like the two people standing in it.
That means we're not interested in spending an entire engagement shoot putting couples into a different pose every thirty seconds. We'll give direction when it's useful, but we also create room for people to walk, talk, laugh, move around, get rained on, and actually experience the place together.
The Tetons do a lot of the work for us.
Should You Cancel Your Jackson Hole Engagement Photos if It Rains?
Usually, no.
Kendall and Sam's session is a perfect example of why.
Clear weather and a full view of the Grand Teton can obviously be incredible, but cloudy and rainy days offer something completely different. The light becomes softer, colors get richer, mountain weather adds atmosphere, and popular areas can feel considerably quieter.
Instead of trying to make a rainy Tetonia afternoon look like a sunny day, we leaned into it.
Those changing conditions are part of photographing people in the Tetons. We've spent years working outside in this landscape, and one of the biggest advantages of hiring a local Jackson Hole engagement photographer is having someone who understands how quickly the light, weather, mountains, roads, and shooting conditions can change.
Sometimes the weather you weren't hoping for creates the photographs you couldn't have planned.
Engagement Photos in Tetonia and Teton Valley
While Jackson Hole and Grand Teton National Park are understandably the best-known locations in the region, the Idaho side of the Tetons is one of our favorite places to photograph couples.
Tetonia, Driggs, and Victor offer incredible engagement photography locations with open fields, dirt roads, farmland, foothills, forests, and massive views toward the Teton Range.
It's also simply a different experience from photographing inside the national park.
Depending on what a couple wants, we can build an engagement session around the iconic Grand Teton landscape, something quieter and more intimate in Teton Valley, or a combination of locations.
For Kendall and Sam, the rain and rural Tetonia landscape gave the photographs a timeless, almost cinematic quality that fit the moment perfectly.
Jackson Hole Engagement Photography and Videography
Teton Photo & Video offers both engagement photography and engagement videography in Jackson Hole and throughout the Tetons.
Couples can book photography by itself, film by itself, or have both their engagement documented through still photographs and motion.
Our background is a little unusual because our team combines fine-art photography with professional documentary and adventure filmmaking. That allows us to approach an engagement film differently than simply creating a slideshow of pretty shots.
An engagement video can capture the things photographs can't: someone's voice, the way you interact, movement through the landscape, laughter, wind through the grass, rain hitting a jacket, and the little moments between the obvious ones.
For couples getting married in Jackson Hole, an engagement session is also a great opportunity for us to work together before the wedding day. You get comfortable in front of our cameras, we learn how you naturally interact, and when the wedding arrives we're no longer strangers showing up with cameras.
Who Should I Hire for Engagement Photos in Jackson Hole?
If you're looking for a Jackson Hole engagement photographer, look for someone whose work you genuinely connect with and who has experience photographing people outdoors in the Tetons.
The landscape here is spectacular, but photographing it well while also making the people in the frame look natural requires understanding both portraiture and the environment.
At Teton Photo & Video, we specialize in photographing and filming couples in the landscapes around Jackson Hole, Grand Teton National Park and Teton Valley. Our style combines documentary storytelling, cinematic imagery and fine-art photography with an emphasis on real moments rather than heavily staged poses.
And because we're local to the Tetons, we're able to help couples think through locations, timing, weather, light and what kind of setting makes the most sense for the experience they want.
Can I Hire the Same Team for Engagement Photography and Video?
Yes. Teton Photo & Video provides both engagement photography and engagement videography in Jackson Hole and the surrounding Teton region.
For couples who want both, having one team photograph and film the session keeps the visual style consistent and avoids having two separate crews trying to direct the same moment.
We also photograph and film weddings, so an engagement session can become the beginning of a larger visual story that continues through the wedding itself.
